Half the town is somewhere else by nine
Pencoed sits on junction 35 and the station’s on the Maesteg branch line running down through Bridgend to Cardiff. A lot of people here work away and are only home in the evenings, which decides when the enquiries land. After six, from a phone, on the sofa, and whoever replies first tends to get the job.
It shapes who’s running the businesses too. A good number of the people I talk to here kept a trade going alongside a day job, or left one of the bigger employers near the technology park and set up on their own. Skills and customers, and no website, or one a relative built in an afternoon that nobody has touched since.
For that sort of business the site has one job. Make it obvious you’re real, you’re nearby, and here’s how to reach you. Two or three pages does it. You don’t need a blog and you almost certainly don’t need a CMS, because you’re never going to log in and write anything, and paying for hosting that can run one is money going out for nothing.
A small map with a lot of villages on it
Pencoed people search with the town name attached and so does everyone in Coychurch, Heol-y-Cyw, Felindre, Brynna and Llanharan. Nobody types the county. They type “electrician Pencoed” or “dog groomer near Llanharan”, and what comes back is the map listings first with the websites underneath. Those village names are the cheapest thing there is to fix and the one most sites skip entirely.
The site itself
Static pages, quick on a phone with patchy signal on the valley road. No page builder, no slider, no cookie banner sat in front of your phone number. I sort the domain, the hosting and the email behind it, and make sure enquiries reach your inbox rather than a spam folder.
If you already pay for a booking tool that works, I’ll link to it rather than charge you to replace something that’s fine. And a small firm’s advantage over a national one is that the page can read like a person wrote it, which costs nothing and is worth a lot.
Ten minutes down the road
So I’ll come to you. First conversation in person, at your place or over a coffee, going through what you’ve got: the domain, whoever registered it, the email, the Facebook page and whatever else is scattered about. I’ll tell you what’s worth keeping.
After that it’s mostly messages. If something breaks you’re texting somebody in the same county who can look at it that day.
Hosting and email
For most sites I build there's no ongoing hosting cost and no monthly retainer. The domain renews once a year at list price, no commission from me, and it's registered in your name so you can take it elsewhere whenever you want.
Email goes on your own custom domain, setup properly so what you send lands in the inbox rather than the spam folder.
