A lot of people starting again
Port Talbot’s economy has been built round the works for generations and the ripple goes a long way past the plant. Contractors, fabricators, engineers, transport, and all the shops and cafes that served the shifts. As things there have changed, a lot of people with twenty or thirty years of skill behind them have set up on their own, doing the same work for different customers.
That’s most of the enquiries I get from towns like this. Somebody who’s very good at the job, has a trade qualification and a van, and has never had to make anyone find them before. The work used to arrive. Now it has to be found, and finding it starts in a search box.
If that’s you, the first version of your site doesn’t need to be impressive. It needs to exist, load fast, say what you do and where, and put your number in front of people. Three pages is enough to start with.
Two streams of work
Domestic customers in Aberavon, Baglan, Sandfields, Taibach and up through Cwmavon and Pontrhydyfen search on their phones for a trade plus a place name, and choose from the three businesses in the map before the websites underneath get a look in.
The other stream is business to business, worth remembering here because a lot of the local trade is subcontracting to bigger operations. That customer isn’t searching in a map at all. They’re deciding whether you look like a real company before they put you on an approved list, which is a completely different read of the same business. Aberavon seafront brings a third sort again, seasonal and visitor led.
A first site that does the job
A handful of plain HTML pages, quick on a phone, with the words already in them. No page builder, no slider, nothing loading in front of your phone number. The domain, the hosting and the email are mine to sort out, and the email matters more than people expect when you’re quoting bigger firms.
If you want somewhere to send people from Facebook, this is exactly what it’s for, and it’s usually the cheapest thing on the list.
Getting started
Port Talbot’s about twenty-five minutes from me so I’ll come to you, on site or wherever suits. Much faster to look at your certificates, your photos and whatever the last person set up for you in person than describe it all back and forth. If a video call fits your day better we’ll do that instead, and after that it’s messages and the odd call.
Hosting and email
For most sites I build there's no ongoing hosting cost and no monthly retainer. The domain renews once a year at list price, no commission from me, and it's registered in your name so you can take it elsewhere whenever you want.
Email goes on your own custom domain, setup properly so what you send lands in the inbox rather than the spam folder.
